usually the head shape is drawn, then the eyes are in the middle of the head -- chin to top of head (then nose is between eye line and chin. mouth between nose line and chin.) but this works quite well to figure out head tilts, which, I find are a PAIN in the butt to draw -nodnod-

I like this tutorial :) Is it common method of face drawing? Usually I'm starting from the shape of all head (btw. can be rendered in 3d, hehe :).

I've read a lot of articles that explain how to illustrate a portrait but I never get to see any pictures. Its good to see some pictures to help me see how it works. Now when I draw people (in a realistic kind of way) I know that my shadows won't look to deep. Thank you for all the info.

It's a good little help for people who have a general knowledge of how to draw heads/know how facial features line up yet have certain problems with head tilts. *nods*

Though the three sections rule might be confusing for beginners, considering that for one thing a head is a three dimensional object and not "flat" as shown here, and also because it doesn't quite work out - even in your example (eyeline, and given the fact that her mouth is open, which automatically extends the chin). Also, the vertical alignment of facial features would come in useful if they were demonstrated - that generally the space between the eyes is as wide as one eye, that the length of the nose from bridge to bottom roughly equals the size of the ears, that the wings of the nose line up with the inner corners of the eyes, and that the mouth's corners (in a neutral expression) pretty much lines up with the center of the eyes.

Anyway, you might want to state that it may not be an ideal tutorial for beginners.

Just my thoughts. =)

This is great. I'd always loved seeing how other work, especially protraits because I myself can never get very far without a reference. >_<
She loks kinda like Cindy Crawford, by the way.
